Canonsburg is a Washington County borough about 18 miles southwest of Pittsburgh, laid out by John Canon around 1789. Pike Street is the main street and the route of the Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade, the second-largest in Pennsylvania after Philadelphia's. With I-79 and U.S. Route 19 running through town and the Southpointe office park next door in Cecil Township, it is a busy commuter town with deep roots.
Canonsburg grew quickly between 1910 and 1930, so the blocks near Pike Street have many older homes with porches, original woodwork and steep stairs. Newer subdivisions in the surrounding townships add larger homes with open kitchens and finished basements. Older homes need extra time on trim and sills, while newer ones show fingerprints and floor traffic first. We plan each visit for the house in front of us, whether it is a Pike Street classic or a new build.
